Turning Tear-off Shingles into Hot Mix Asphalt: Innovation towards Zero Waste and a Smaller Carbon Footprint

Tuesday, February 9th, 4:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. - C&D Recycling

Michelle Caulfield, Senior Associate, Cascadia Consulting Group

Recycling construction and demolition waste is rapidly becoming a focus for municipalities aiming to maximize diversion, achieve zero waste, and reduce their climate impacts.  King County’s (WA) LinkUp program is working with the recycling and paving communities to encourage the development of a local hot mix asphalt (HMA) end market for tear-off asphalt shingle waste.  This presentation will provide a preview of a pilot project demonstrating the benefits of recycled asphalt shingle use in paving applications.  It will provide attendees with a solid understanding of the steps to success including engaging partners and stakeholders, overcoming regulatory barriers, and public-private partnerships.
